RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia (infection of the lungs) in children younger than one year of age in the United States.

 

RSV Symptoms

  • Runny nose
  • Decrease in appetite
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Fever
  • Wheezing
  • Symptoms in infants typically include irritability, decreased appetite, lethargy, and breathing difficulties. 

 

Please note that while monitoring symptoms, they can usually appear in stages and not all at once.

How to care for a Respiratory Syncytial Virus

How to care for a Respiratory RSV may last up to 1-2 weeks. During that period, you can take the following measures to relieve your symptoms:Manage fever and pain with pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. (Never give aspirin to children.)Drink enough fluids to keep your body hydrated. It is important to prevent dehydration while treating this virus.Before giving your child over-the-counter cold medicines, talk to one of our healthcare providers. Some medications contain ingredients that are harmful to children.
